Festivities of Elche
As every August the city of Elche, in the province of Alicante, is decorated to celebrate its festivities and as the most important part of these, is the celebration of the party of El Misteri d’Elx, a cultural treasure declared a National Monument in 1931 and Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2001.
The Misteri d’Elx is a representation, of medieval origin, of the assumption of the Virgin Mary, which is celebrated in the Basilica of Santa María de Elche.
The party or Misteri d’Elx is represented in 2 parts for two consecutive days. The first part “La Vesprá” that is celebrated today August 14 and that begins at 6:00 pm and “La Festa” on Wednesday the 15 th at the same time.
On the first day of the Misteri d’Elx the Virgin Mary, her cortege and angels, whose figures are all represented by men as the work prevents female participation, and an angel that descends from the ceiling the dome of the basilica in a device called Mangrana, he will announce to Maria that his death is near and he hands her a golden palm to take with her at his burial.
Throughout the night thousands of ilicitanos will watch the body of the Virgin in the traditional nit de la Roà.
The second day begins with the apostles and the burial of the Virgin Mary and her coronation and ascension to the kingdom of heaven that will end the Mystery.
From Alicante it is very easy to move to Elche to enjoy this festivity, both by bus and by train, as both have extended their schedules for the celebration of the Nit de la Roà.
